During our visit to New Orleans in March 2013, we stayed at the Roosevelt, a Waldorf Astoria property. We wanted to stay in the French Quarter, but everything is very expensive! The Roosevelt, however, is literally across the street from the French Quarter, a few blocks down from Bourbon Street, and about a 10-minute walk from the Mississippi River. What more could you ask for from a New Orleans hotel? We were on a budget so we took their lowest room category, but it was more than what we could have hoped for.

I don’t usually think of Waldorf Astoria properties when I think of traveling with kids—I think of luxury. I was, however, pleasantly surprised; from the moment we pulled up, everyone was helpful and more than pleasant—they were fun. The valets were very patient and friendly, and they even entertained my three-year-old while I dove through the scattered stuffed animals and empty boxes of Cheez-Its in the back seat. (My car was trashed after the 16-hour car ride, and I couldn’t find my toiletry bag!) A bellboy quickly arrived to bring our things upstairs, and he made room on the trolley for my son to sit which the little man thoroughly enjoyed. Our room was incredibly spacious with high ceilings and two plush queen beds. Everything was simple, yet elegant.

The Roosevelt has a fabulous rooftop pool which is open from dawn until dusk for those of you who have little people who are early risers. Teddy’s Café is an open restaurant in the lobby of the restaurant, and it is the best place on property (besides your room—everyone loves room service!) to eat with kids. The atmosphere is laid back and inviting so you don’t feel like your kids are disturbing your neighbors by building towers out of the creamers and jam packets. Teddy’s serves breakfast and lunch, which is more than you need, because New Orleans is famous for its cuisine. (So eat your big meals out in the city!) My son loved peering through the little glass display to pick out his own sweet treat.

When you are ready to venture forth, hit the concierge’s desk. These guys know what’s going on around New Orleans, and they will happily make reservations for you so you don’t miss out.

Our stay was so good that we got our first hotel rewards card. For anyone looking rack up points, the Waldorf Astoria brand is part of Hilton hotels and resorts. For those of you who aren’t Hilton rewards members, always take the time to call the property directly to inquire about special rates, or ask your travel agent to research it before booking. Many properties offer AAA, military and other discounts—which the Roosevelt does. Overall, The Roosevelt is the New Orleans hotel to stay in during your family adventure to the Big Easy if you want a great location for your home base, exceptional service, good value and you enjoy the luxury feel.
