Top Trip Tricks for Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts

By July 3, 2014October 5th, 2017One Comment

Did you know that the island of Martha’s Vineyard was once a glacier? That’s a very different start from its Caribbean island counterparts! Summertime brings visions of memorable getaways, and no better place might be best for you and the family to get in prime beach time than Martha’s Vineyard, or MV for short. Situated off the coast of Massachusetts and reachable by plane or ferry, there’s loads for you and your crew to do, especially in season among other vacation fans.

Getting there

The ferry to MV leaves from Wood’s Hole on the mainland. If there’s time, check out the Wood’s Hole mini aquarium for the kids. Secure a ticket ahead of time as the routes do sell out in the summer, and feel free to bring a car or bikes if preferred for an extra fee. You can also grab a private boat service. Flights fly all year through Cape Air from Boston, or you can seasonally catch a plane from New York or Boston on airlines like JetBlue and Delta.

Grabbing eats

This is family central, and MV is paradise for kids. Almost every place for every meal is equipped with stellar kid’s menus and wholesome options. Don’t miss the chance for fresh seafood right on the shore at Nancy’s Snack Bar (complete with roof deck), then have a sweet treat to go at Back Door Donuts. Both are located in Oak Bluffs, but check out the island’s other great areas, such as Edgartown and Vineyard Haven too.

Awesome accommodations

One of the most charming things about Martha’s Vineyard is its dedication to sticking with small-town personality. There’s no bustling resorts there to block the beautiful sea breeze and the entire island is ideal for exploration as a family crew.

Picking a good base is key to the perfect Martha’s Vineyard experience. Several bed and breakfasts are good with children, especially Edgartown Commons. Offering studios, one and two bedroom suites, there’s plenty of space to stretch out and relax between beach trips. There’s a pool and playground out back, perfectly complementing the cozy, friendly feel of each room packed with essential amenities. Specials run at the beginning and end of summer, so you can use that vacation budget instead on an extra lobster roll or two. You can reach them via car or shuttle easily from the ferry.

Make a date for Martha’s Vineyard and celebrate the summer New England style!

I was recently in Provincetown and really wanted to visit Martha’s Vineyard! Unfortunately we didn’t have a lot of time so didn’t get the opportunity. Hopefully next time!
